Management's Primary Focus is on Health & Safety
At Metropolis, we continually strive to provide the safest workplace in the construction industry. Worker safety is as important to us as the craftsmanship and functionality we build into each of our projects. From company culture to industry-wide advocacy, Metropolis takes careful steps to keep our employees safe and our construction sites accident-free. We know that safety does not occur by chance. It is a result of careful attention to all company operations by those who are directly and indirectly involved. Metropolis employees work diligently to execute the company's policy of maintaining safety and occupational health. Management is providing the leadership and support necessary to develop and maintain a good safety program.
Our Quality Control Program is Essential
We're committed to integrating innovation and exceptional quality into the design of every project and ensuring that the site preparation phase is performed in strict accordance with approved plans and specifications. Over many years we have implemented explicit quality control procedures as well as a comprehensive quality assurance program that defines our extraordinarily high standards for performance and delivery of the construction process. The plan provides the necessary framework and guidelines for ensuring that our targeted quality requirements for each project are achieved in a systematic and timely manner, beginning with our proven delivery process. Delivery Process Issuance Of Work Customer issues the work. Creation of File We create a file using the contract number and job number created by the customer. This helps us establish a filing system for that job. Entry Into Ledger Book After a file folder is created, the work is then logged into a ledger book and in that ledger we record the contract number, date we received the work order, the location(s) of the work order and the type of work and description of work to be done. In this ledger we also include the start and completion dates. This ledger becomes a great tool for Metropolis and the customer when looking up jobs quickly if a question or incident arises. In the job file itself we have an area for notes, permit information, work prints, stipulation time and type of work to take place. Inside the folder would be all the paperwork relating to the work order permits, cut forms, time sheets, right of way information, layout, blue prints, pre-survey of job site, parking information and photos of the area. Job Board The job is then placed on an open job board list in the order of priority provided to us by our Superintendent. Preliminary Survey of Job Site Once a job is scheduled on our job board, we perform pre-surveys and walk-throughs of every job. Any issues or differences from the work order are immediately written down on that work order and given over to customer prior to our crews starting work. This allows for changes to be made without any down time paid out to us for mistakes or oversights made by customer. This walk through allows us to assess parking restrictions, public exposure for possible interference by utilities, safety related issues for our crews and the public in general and to get an overall layout of the area. During our pre-survey, we also look for defective hardware and pole issues and report them to the proper management. In that way, the customer can respond to these potential defects before a complaint is recorded by the municipality or governing authority. Right-Of-Way Issues Even though most of our customers secure the right of way when entering a property with new facilities, we have found that we were losing a lot of time because the right of way was not secured properly or that the owner did not receive an explanation of the scope of work to take place on their property. This can cause an immeasurable added expense for the customer to pay us to standby while a customer foreman makes a decision or arrives at the site. What we have done on every work order is reviewed the right of way information and notified the owner of the work to take place. We extend an offer to those owners of meeting with them at their property in person to go over any and all concerns they may have. By doing this we put a “face” on the contracting company that will perform the work. Traffic Control Plan The primary function of work zone traffic control is to allow vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians to move safely and easily through or around our work areas. Drivers and pedestrians need to be guided in a clear and positive manner while approaching and traversing temporary traffic control zones. Minor modifications may be made, as necessary, to accommodate site conditions; however, a plan’s original goal must be maintained. After our pre-survey of a job site, our crews arrive to place necessary signs and traffic control devices to visually guide drivers through work zones. Signing, channelizing devices, arrow panels, and warning beacons all provide a message to the driver, pedestrian and cyclist as they enter the work zone area. Where required, a permit board is also placed showing the valid permits to do the work. This notifies the public in the area when and where the work will take place. A 24 hour reach number is also on the permit board so anyone in the area can call if they have any concerns or issues about the construction work that will be done. Traffic delays due to work zone operations are anticipated and addressed appropriately. Excessive delays contribute to work zone incidents of road rage or crashes and we do our best to keep those to a reasonable minimum. Traffic should not be allowed to back up past the advance warning signs and sign locations may need to be adjusted to fit actual site conditions or additional signs added. Oversight This is a great concern to us and helps in reduced cost to our customers. We have a process that we follow from the issuance of a job to its completion. The controls that we have in place from parking, right of way issues, layout of job, inspectors, field supervisors, quality control inspectors, safety inspectors and management all help in the completion of a job without delay to our customers. Our quality control efforts are assessed on a quarterly basis and all recommendations are reviewed by upper management and integrated as part of our ongoing procedures. |
